Cuomo probes six more life insurers – Legal News Line

May 1st, 2012 by maureen | No Comments | Filed in Hot News
NEW YORK (Legal Newsline) – New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo has subpoenaed six additional insurers as the State continues its probe into whether life insurance companies have defrauded families of deceased military members.

“It is shocking and plain wrong for these multinational life insurance companies to pocket hundreds of millions in profits that really belong to those who have lost family members,” Cuomo said in a statement Thursday.

Genworth Financial, Inc., Guardian Life of America, AXA SA’s MONY Life Insurance Co., New York Life Insurance Co., Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co. and Unum Group received the subpoenas, Cuomo spokesman Richard Bamberger said Friday.

Cuomo, who is running for the Democratic nomination for governor of New York, has now subpoenaed at least eight companies. On Thursday, his office said it issued subpoenas to MetLife, Inc., and Prudential Financial, Inc.

The attorney general is looking into whether life insurers are defrauding families of deceased military personnel by funneling millions of dollars worth of death benefits to themselves.

At issue is whether the insurers, rather than pay out lump sums upon the deaths of the policyholders, instead are keeping money in potentially risky accounts they control, and paying low yields to the survivors.

“It appears that the substantial interest earned on these accounts mostly benefit and enrich the insurers at the expense of the families to whom the money really belongs. And, beneficiaries are not adequately informed by the insurers of the details of these accounts including the fact that the insurers are making huge profits at the expense of the grieving family,” Cuomo said.

“Specifically, the insurers place the cash belonging to these families in the insurers’ corporate accounts, reportedly earning the companies upwards of 4.8 percent. The insurers then pay families as little as 0.5 percent interest — less than half the rate available at some FDIC insured banks.”

However, the practice is common, but not universal, in the life insurance industry, according to the Wall Street Journal.

By keeping the money, insurers are able to earn a higher return on the funds than they pay out in interest.

The accounts, according to the Journal, have been around for at least two decades, and state insurance regulators — who monitor and regulate the practice — say they can serve as a useful option for consumers not yet ready to make immediate financial decisions.

‘Jersey Shore’ Returns: More Parties, More Clubs, More GTL In Miami.com

March 30th, 2012 by maureen | No Comments | Filed in Hot News

It has been six months since we last checked in with our favorite housemates in Seaside Heights, New Jersey, but tonight (Thursday, July 29), the wait is finally over. “Jersey Shore,” the hit MTV show that turned cast members like Snooki and the Situation into household names since its premiere late last year, is back with brand new episodes. This time around, the cast gets transplanted from the house on the boardwalk to the sunny shores of Miami for some good, old-fashioned fun in the sun.

There haven’t been new episodes of the show in a while, though the cast members have been involved in plenty of other media projects since then. The Situation has a deal for a workout video and a book, while several of the cast members helped co-host the pre-show at the MTV Movie Awards. They partied to mark the release of the show’s official soundtrack, and they also recently showed up at the New York Stock Exchange to ring the opening bell. They have become fixtures on talk shows and on red carpets and are now so much a part of the pop culture fabric that even President Barack Obama referenced them recently.

Just in case you forgot what the show was about, who the best hook-ups were and what the most amazing lines of dialogue were, check out MTV News’ own Jim Cantiello blowing through “Jersey Shore in 60 Seconds,” which includes insights into the relationships, fights, drinking and drama that made up the landmark debut season of the show. Can the second season keep up with this?

What was your favorite moment from the first season of “Jersey Shore”? Let us know in the comments!

‘America’s Got Talent’: Even more semifinalists revealed

March 23rd, 2012 by maureen | No Comments | Filed in Hot News
Welcome back again for tonight’s AGT results show. It’s Chris in KS back once again to bring you a recap of who is staying and who is going home.

Tonight’s first group that is brought up to the stage is the South Philly Vikings, CJ Dippa, and Haspop. The wife and I are guessing that Haspop is going to stay. Sharon is shocked at the grouping, but I’m not really sure why. And moving on to the semi-finals is Haspop! Howie says that he thinks America made the right decision and says that Haspop has the wow factor that he thinks the winner of this competition should have.

And up after the break is the JabbaWockeeZ (the first season winner of America’s Best Dance Crew and previous contestants on AGT). They look like what Fighting Gravity could become with a lot of practice and more experience behind them. It was pretty cool to watch.

house design ideas

As a matter of fact, there are some interior designers who were able to earn a living because of the reliable and consistent services that they provided to their customers. Some of them even became very popular because of the unique and exclusive designs that they mad.

The only reason why they were able to make consistent ideas is because they were able to make use of their imagination. They were able to come up with an idea whether your house is big or small. In fact, there are certain interior design ideas that are simple but gorgeous. With this, you do not have to spend a lot of money just to change the design of you house. All you need to do is to buy appropriate materials that will be fitted with the interior design that you have chosen.

Most of the interior designers make use of their old ideas. However, they are not imitating the design but they are trying to get an idea based on their past styles and designs. Most of the home owners rely on the services of the interior designers. They are aware that the designers will be able to meet their expectation. Being the home owner, it would be better if you will be having a good working relationship with the interior designer that you have chosen.

At the present time, most of the home owners want that their house will get the attention of the people who will be entering their houses. Perhaps, this is the reason why they are interested with the various interior design ideas that are available. Some of the home owners utilize the computer because there are certain websites that are available and accessible to use. Before they will consult the interior designers, they also want to have their own ideas. They also want to contribute something that will provide them comfort. However, changing the interior design of the house is not an easy task for the designers most especially if you will be controlling them.

Some of the home owners prefer to use simple interior design ideas. They are aware that simple designs are better compared to an exaggerated or complicated design that will change the atmosphere of the house. With this, they will no longer have to spend a lot of their money. It will just depend on the arrangement and organization of the equipments and furniture inside the house.
