Finally. After months of drip-fed teasers, mysterious leaked shots and countless spy images, the all-new 2011 Ford Explorer has finally been revealed in all its glory. The new ute is an accurate representation of current trends in the new car market and the embodiment of everything that Ford is doing right.

Yes, you read that correctly. The latest generation of the Explorer will come onto the market with a new car-based platform, a lighter and more streamlined body, fuel efficient downsized engines and several world-firsts in safety technology.

That doesn’t mean the Explorer has gone soft, however. It still sports a “4WD” badge to appease those 20 percent of Explorer owners who like to take their vehicles off-road. There’s also a generous 7.9 inches of ground clearance as well as the advanced Terrain Management System developed in conjunction with Land Rover. This latter feature lets the driver select one of four settings to identify the road surface–normal, sand, mud and ruts, or snow mode–as well as offering Hill Descent control that requires the driver only to steer while the car descends at a safe pace.

One obvious distinction between the 2011 Ford Explorer and its more truck-like predecessors is the SUV’s new fuel efficient engine lineup. Customers will be able to pick from two engine choices; a four-cylinder EcoBoost engine displacing just 2.0-liters and developing 237 horsepower and 250 foot-pound of torque, and a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V-6 with twin independently timed overhead camshafts and an output of 290 horsepower. The two engines are 30 percent and 32 percent more fuel efficient, respectively, than the previous generation’s V-6 and V-8 powerplants.

Each Explorer engine is paired with a unique six-speed automatic transmission, combining lowered initial gears for improved off-the-line acceleration and higher gearing for improved efficiency at lower engine rpm when cruising.

When it comes to safety, the new 2011 Ford Explorer is a leader in this segment. It will be the world’s first vehicle to offer inflatable safety belts, for the two outboard seats in the second row. Those are what Ford calls the “family oriented seats,” where both children and older passengers are likely to ride. The inflatable belts spread the restraint load if triggered, reducing the force on any specific body part–and they also inflate high enough up to restrain forward head motion.

High strength steels, an array of airbags, side canopies that are triggered if the car rolls over, and a number of electronic safety warning systems including blind-spot assist, cross-traffic alert, radar-based adaptive cruise control with automatic brakes, new SYNC with 911 assist and SOS Post-Crash Alert, and a new curve control feature that slows the vehicle as much as 10 mph a second (and illuminates the brake lights) if it enters a curve too fast, all add to the new Explorer’s stellar safety credentials.

Despite a sleeker overall appearance, the 2011 Ford Explorer is just as big as ever. In fact, it’s a full five inches wider than its predecessor, with plenty of space for seven people and all their gear. Inside, the interior is a notable step up from the previous Explorer. It’s fully car-like, and only the rotating Terrain Management System knob on the console–with a center button for Hill Descent Control–gives away its off-pavement capabilities.

All-in-all there are 12 class exclusives for the 2011 Ford Explorer, in safety, connectivity, and features. They include the latest incarnation of the MyFordTouch interface system and the MyKey system nanny monitoring feature that allows parents to set limits on certain vehicle parameters–radio volume, maximum speed, seatbelt usage–for new or teenaged drivers, as well as an active parking-assist system, LED ambient interior lighting, and the capless EasyFuel system.

First sales of the 2011 Ford Explorer are scheduled to start later this year.

Entourage Season 7 Episode 4:Watch Tequila Sunrise Online S07E14 – Entourage season 7 episode 4 called “Tequila Sunrise” which was directed by Adam Davidson and written by Doug Ellin aired last night on HBO.
The installment answered couple of the questions that were left from last week’s episode.
-Turtle who is still trying to sleep with Alex arrived in Mexico to find out that her “business” had nothing to do with drug nor gun smuggling.
Alex who is the biggest tease of the century simply wanted Turtle to meet a family friend Carlos (played by Miguel Sandoval) who would like him to convince Vince to become the spokesman of their tequila company, Avion.

-As Ari he found a way to piss off the wrong woman again.
After he delivers a brilliant presentation to the NFL patrons like Casey Wasserman, Mike Meldman and John Ellis, played by Alan Dale to get the money that he needs for his mega stadium, his whole world comes crumbling down.
Indeed Ari really screwed the wrong girl- Andrew Klein calls him from rehab and informs that him that Lizzie Grant is out to get his clients.
-Meanwhile Vince’s brother has the brilliant idea of inviting John Stamos over to Vince’s mansion in order to impress him and seal the deal for the sitcom.
Here is the summary of the episode:

Turtle gets a south-of-the-border business pitch from Alex, but has a hard time believing he isn’t being used. Drama enlists Bob Saget to help him smooth out a rough first impression with John Stamos, a potential sitcom co-star. Ari’s euphoria after making an NFL pitch to a group of Hollywood high rollers is tempered when he learns that Lizzie may be siphoning off some of his prized clients. Eric and Scott patch up their differences with an eye on Vince’s future – and the shared success of their company.

Overall is was a very good episode that left us with more questions than answers once again.
Tequila Sunrise had a bit more drama and mystery than usual but then again, that is a great thing.
Now for these burning questions:
Will Lavin turn Vince against Eric during their trip in Vegas?
Is Alex using Turtle?
What are your thoughts on Ari’s new assistant?
Who is Lizzie working for?
What are your thoughts on John Stamos’ assistant named Squanto?

Here are few quotes from the episode:

“show him you can play the ugly brother in real life, too.”
“Ping pong is the new billiards.”
“It’s going to be a long day for Uncle Jesse.”

What are your thoughts on the episode?

That’s all we have for now on Entourage S07E04.

Apartment Theft Prevention Tips

apartment

As much as you hate to ever leave the comfy confines of your apartment, occasionally one just needs to get away from it all and take a vacation. Sadly, theft is a reality in the modern world, but by taking a few simple steps you can help to significantly lessen your odds of being struck by a burglar the next time you leave town.

As exciting as that cruise to the Bahamas may be, do your best to put a muzzle on yourself (and any roommates you may have) prior to leaving for your trip. Word can travel quickly in an apartment community, and you never know who might become privy to the information. Same goes for social networking websites – feel free to update your Facebook page to read your mood as ‘psyched!’, but avoid a lengthy post about hitting the road.

If you have a neighbor that you trust, give them a list of dates you’ll be gone as well as emergency contact info. Ask them to keep an eye out for any suspicious activity in your absence, or better yet ask them to do a walk through your apartment every other day. Try and ideally choose a trusted solo neighbor, rather than one with big-mouthed kids who might spread the word all over town that you are in the wind.

An alarm system is a great way to deter would-be robbers, although your community manager may not be willing to foot the bill. Remind him or her that they will get a break on their homeowner’s insurance much of the time. If they still say ‘no go’, you might want to consider purchasing a wireless system on your own, which can be taken with you to any future apartments down the road.

Be sure and lock up any irreplaceable documents, photos, etc. in some sort of secure lockbox or fire-proof safe. Even better, consider renting a safety deposit box offsite altogether. If your apartment community allows pets, throw a ‘beware of dog’ sign in your most prominent window (even if you don’t own one!).

A final wall of defense is to invest in some timers for the lights in your apartment. Ideally you will want to have at least two different lights timed in various sections of the home; nothing says ‘I’m away!’ like a lone light turning on at the strike of 9pm every night like clockwork. Stagger the lights in the various rooms to give the impression of normal living conditions. Most important of all, remember to have fun on your vacation! You’ve earned it, so don’t let would-be thieves rob you of your peace of mind.

TO Tidbits – Sunday, July 25th – Taste T.O.

On February 17th, 2012 by maureen | No Comments | Posted in Hot News

Here’s this week’s round-up of the latest local food and restaurant news…

Openings:

  • Between chef Scott Conant’s now infamous “Open Letter to Toronto” and the flurry of tweets and blog posts that followed the media preview on Wednesday, it’s been hard to avoid this news, but for those who missed it somehow – Scarpetta in the Thompson Hotel (550 Wellington Street West) is open – or is it? The first full dinner service was to have taken place last Thursday, but there have been unexpected delays (possibly liquor license related, but no one is saying for sure). At this point, it’s unclear when the doors will open, but popular opinion seems to be “any day now”.
  • We’d love to tell you something about BLD Restaurant (36 Toronto Street) besides just a name and address, but our Google-fu must be weak today, as all we can find is info about a restaurant with the same name in Los Angeles.
  • Mark Ali of The Village Butcher in Etobicoke has opened an organic and gluten-free all-day breakfast joint around the corner from his shop, and it’s fittingly called Around The Corner (132 6th Street).
  • Also quite literally named is Sushi on Roncy (293 Roncesvalles Avenue), taking over the former location of Freshwood Grill.

  • First mentioned as “Coming Up” in the June 28th, 2009 installment of this column, Salt Wine Bar (225 Ossington Avenue) finally opened to the public last night with a special tasting menu showcasing the Iberian cuisine of chef Dave Kemp.
  • Pol Cristo-Williams of Sweaty Betty’s and The Red Light is continuing to expand his hipster bar empire with the opening of The Unlovable (1415 Dundas Street West), featuring “pints, pinball and Pac-Man”, not to mention a fully loaded jukebox.
  • Cali Vietnamese Restaurant (179 Dundas Street West) is now open and offering a lunch-oriented menu of phð, bún and bánh mì.
  • Apparently we still haven’t hit critical mass for indie cafés in Toronto, as there’s another new one this week – Hub Coffee House (1028 Shaw Street).

Closings:

  • Barrio Lounge (896 Queen Street East) was one of the first decent spots to eat in Leslieville when it opened in 2003, but it seems that it couldn’t keep up with the numerous newcomers, and is now closed for good.
  • Annex tea shop All Things Tea (476 Bloor Street West) has served its last cuppa.

If you have a scoop to share about the local food & restaurant scene, please let us know so we can include it in a future edition of T.O. Tidbits.
